Nicola joined the British Army in 1999 at just 16 years old. Over the next decade and a half, she served across the globe as a Combat HR Specialist, managing vital personnel support and administrative operations under highly challenging conditions.
“One moment that always sticks with me is spending my 21st birthday out in Iraq while on guard duty (stag),” Nicola recalls. “I was out in the middle of a massive sandstorm, and at that point, I hadn’t even been issued my desert combats yet. By the time the storm passed, I was covered head to toe in sand and looked like I’d been wearing them all along! It sums up military life perfectly: not always glamorous, entirely unpredictable, but something you look back on and laugh about. It was all about getting on with the job.”
After 15 years of service, the arrival of her two sons prompted Nicola to look for a new challenge that balanced her career ambitions with family stability. After a successful stint in the aviation sector, she found herself naturally drawn back to the fast-paced world of transport, joining Stagecoach in 2021.
Moving from the military to the corporate world can be daunting, but Nicola found an immediate cultural alignment at Stagecoach.Nicola was instantly struck by the operational pace of Stagecoach, where daily decisions have an immediate, visible impact.

“I was surprised by just how complex the industry is from the inside,” says Nicola. “From intricate workforce planning and strict compliance to keeping services running smoothly day in, day out, there is an immense amount of moving parts.”
Today, as a Senior People Business Partner, Nicola acts as a trusted advisor to Stagecoach leaders – coaching managers, guiding organisational change, and navigating complex talent discussions. She credits her military background as her ultimate toolkit for corporate HR.
In the fast-moving transport sector, high-stakes situations arise quickly. Nicola’s military training allows her to step back, cut through the noise, and focus on practical solutions.
When handling complex Employee Relations (ER) cases where emotions run high, Nicola keeps situations grounded. She helps managers assess risks calmly and implement fair, consistent solutions rather than reacting impulsively.
In the Army, trust and teamwork are matters of survival. Nicola has integrated this ethos entirely into her corporate approach. By focusing on open, reliable communication, she has built deep partnerships with business leaders, helping them build independent management capabilities.
